Microsoft Virtual Earth/MapPoint Webservices

What is Virtual Earth? Microsoft description is - "Virtual Earth" means the immersive web based mapping service developed by Microsoft that combines road maps and directions with "Birds-eye" and aerial imagery". MapPoint/Virtual Earth is accessed through an API, enabling an organisation to access three services:
- Find - Geocoding an address to an X and Y co-ordinate that can be located on a map or a "pin"
- Render - The creation of the actual map
- Routing - the path between two or more points on a map, can be explained as driving directions.
- and through MapPoint, more complex spacial analysis
There has been a lot of interest in Australia and New Zealand for MapPoint/Virtual Earth Webservice. Up until recently, contact was to be made through the UK office and now there is a local contact and support. MapData Sciences Pty Ltd (MDS) has been appointed reseller for MapPoint/Virtual Earth Webservice for Australia and New Zealand. MDS was appointed to this position due to the 20 years experience they have in the Australian and New Zealand marketplace and has made the investment in providing the local sales and support. Microsoft is providing the mapping service and MDS is responsible for establishing each customers MapPoint Web Services account and all end user support.

Virtual Earth is available at no charge for people developing non-commercial applications, however, once there is a commercial interest, a Services account is required. MDS is the supplier of mapping data and online services for Australia and New Zealand and supplies Microsoft with the data used in Virtual Earth.
